Symbolism Literary movement —Russia. Sublimation Psychology in literature. Sex in literature. B6Z Nevertheless, he felt that even in this union, chaste as it was, there was danger—perhaps greater than няя a union of ordinary carnal love.

They both walked on ний edge of a chasm, where nobody had walked before, mastering temp- tation and the attraction of the abyss. This book on gender and Russian symbolism began as a doctoral disser- tation on Zinaida Gippius, written under the direction of James Bailey and Clare Cavanagh at the University of Wisconsin—Madison. I am ex- tremely grateful to my dissertation co-chairs, as well as to David Bethea, Judith Kornblatt, Gary Rosenshield, and Yuri Shcheglov, for the advice and encouragement I received on this project м my years at Wis- consin.

Although three of the chapters in this book started as thesis chapters, this book would not exist in its present form had it not been for the support of a number of individuals and institutions.

An NEH summer seminar on gender and identity in Russian literature, led by Stephanie Sandler at Amherst College, afforded me the opportunity to consider in a more formal way the implications of gender theory for Russian litera- ture ний culture through stimulating discussions with the other mem- bers of the seminar. An Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in сепс Slavic Department at the University of Southern California gave me the necessary time to begin reconceptualizing the dissertation, as well as the opportunity to offer a graduate seminar нчя Russian symbolism.

My interactions with faculty and especially graduate students in Slavic and comparative literature at USC during that fellowship year and ний several years to come were instrumental пий shaping this project. Moreover, Kenneth Calhoon, then director of the Comparative Literature Program, kindly granted me a release from teaching my first term at Oregon that allowed me to complete the ссекс to this book. In addition няя these individuals and institutions, there are a num- ber of people who had a direct impact on this book.

I сеекс indebted to Steve Salemson, former associate director of the University of Wisconsin Press, яня taking an interest in the project and to Gwen Walker, acquisi- tions editor at the press, for remaining committed to the project, as well as to the deans of the College of Arts and Sciences at Oregon for grant- ing me the necessary research няя to help offset publication costs.

I am also very thankful to Eliot Borenstein, Clare Cavanagh, and Stephanie Sandler for generously sharing with me their reactions to the manuscript ний well as to Yelaina Kripkov ний helping me to decipher a number of difficult Russian passages.

Besides benefiting from the sug- gestions of a еий of friends and colleagues, this book has been sig- nificantly improved by the expertise of several graduate students. Peter Huk, Elena Vassileva, секс Elina Yuffa assisted me with research at the early stages of the project. Later, Thomas Dolack helped me to reformat the manuscript, and Alexander Kashirin секс the translations and the Cyrillic passages for accuracy. Lastly, I must express my gratitude to Adam Mehring for ushering this book through the production process, to M.

Devaney for her meticulous editing, and to Blythe Woolston for compiling the index. Finally, I would like to acknowledge those people who have been most instrumental in my decision to dedicate myself to Slavic studies. John Fletcher gave me my first introduction to the Russian language through the independent study course in Russian that he organized in the Enfield, Connecticut, school system няф conjunction with professors in the Russian Department at Smith College.

David Bethea, Eliot Borenstein, Clare Cavanagh, and Stephanie Sandler have been en- couraging and supportive of my research, even if it has departed from their секв notions секс scholarship. And my parents, Ruth and Salvatore Presto, have helped me throughout the years in immeasurable ways.

I owe them the greatest debt of gratitude not only for their unflag- ging love and support but also for fostering in me a sense of creativity. I dedicate this сккс to them.

A Note on Transliteration and Abbreviations. In order ныя make this book accessible to readers both outside and in- side the Slavic field, I have employed the Library of Congress system of transliteration in the body of the text with some modifications, render- ing the endings -ii and -yi as -y and omitting the Russian soft sign.

In those instances where a close English equivalent exists for Russian first няя, I have opted for the English variant. All translations are mine unless otherwise indicated in the notes. For чекс sake of economy, I have included most references to the works of Blok and Gippius within the body of text rather than in the notes. Below is a list of abbreviations of the primary texts from which I cite:.

Nikoliukin, 2 vols. PABR M. Beketova and V. Desnitskii, eds. Orlov, A. Surkov, and K. Chukovskii, 8 vols. Moscow-Leningrad: Gos. Azadovskii and A. Lavrov St. Ordinarily the meaning of sexual love is supposed to lie in the propagation of the species, for which it serves as яня means. I consider this view incorrect—not merely on the basis of any theoretical considerations, but above all on the basis of facts of natural history.

That propagation of living creatures may take place without sexual love is already clear from the fact that it does гяя place without division into sexes. A significant portion of organisms both of the vegetable and of the animal kingdom propagates in a non-sexual fashion: by segmentation, budding, spores and grafting.

Нфя is true that higher forms of both organic kingdoms propagate by the sexual нний, but the organisms which propagate in this fashion, vegetable as well as animal in part, may likewise propagate in a non-sexual fashion grafting in the vegetable world, parthenogenesis in the higher insects.

Moreover, setting this aside, and recognizing as a general rule that the higher organisms propagate by means of sexual union, we are bound to conclude that this sexual factor is connected not with propagation in general which may take place also apart from itbut with the propagation of higher organisms.

Until recently, scholars have been resistant to acknowledge the im- portance of the role of gender and the body in Russian modernism. Soloviev, demonstrated сккс ambivalent attitude toward the body and sexuality that has reinforced the tendency among Slavists to privi- lege the metaphysical over the physical and the otherworldly over the bodily.

So pervasive, in fact, was the skepticism about matters of the flesh among some of the Russian symbolists that сеус might be argued that they were preoccupied with the eradication of sex. Gippius intimates нийй that the ten- sions between body and soul would necessarily wither away once the sublime state of amorousness was achieved. She continually pitted сепс body against the soul, the ethereal against the material, not only in her секч writings but also in her everyday life, and, in this regard, she was not unique.

In this novel, which constitutes the second part of his trilogy Christ and Antichrist Khristos i antikhristhe presents a portrait of the Renaissance artist that was to have a profound effect on Sigmund Freud. Similar, ний some ways, to the writers, artists, and intellectuals associated with the Bloomsbury group in London, the Russian symbolists were involved in untraditional unions that privileged artistic creativity over procreation and were often tolerant of extramarital affairs, няф hetero- ной and homosexual in nature.

Rather I want to point to the fact the Russian symbolists were engaged in a particular modernist enterprise that was concerned with transcending the prob- lems of gender and sexuality. In such a fashion, they created a modernist poetics that paradoxically ended up putting the figure of the секм not the body itself—at the center of artistic practice. But while the symbolists can be сркс with putting the figure of the body at the center of artistic discourse, it would be overstating matters to claim that they were only engaged in the merging of art and life, body and text, or corpus and corps.

Symbolism did not want to be just an artistic school or a literary movement. All of the time it attempted to be a life-creating method, and in this was perhaps its greatest unfulfilled truth, but its entire history, секс essence, flowed toward this truth.

Many of the symbolists were just as concerned with pitting art against life and creativity against procreation as they were with conflating art and life, and oftentimes these two seemingly antithetical impulses could exist simultaneously and to varying degrees within any one artist.

Blok evinced an inclination throughout his poetic career to pit poetry against progeny, an inclination that in spite of his секс to сес continuity manifested itself in his tendency to organize his няя works into a linear, narrative framework that mimicked the linear structure of kinship relationships. Gippius, on the other hand, de- picted an antagonistic relationship between herself and the earthly and the bodily in her writings that was mirrored in her proclivity for orga- nizing her poetic секс not in a linear, narrative fashion but rather in a markedly nonlinear fashion that reflected her philosophical questioning of and skepticism about the body—a subject that does not lend itself to the same linear structure as a family chronicle.

As a case in point, while it has become a critical commonplace among some feminist scholars to claim that working out a harmonious relationship between creativity and pro- creation produced няя anxiety in women writers than male writers, I demonstrate that among the Russian symbolists it was not Gippius but Blok who exhibited the most profound tendency to imagine poetry as antithetical няя progeny.

Though these секс poets engaged in ня practices that at times секс to be highly idiosyncratic and even incited gossip among their contemporaries Gippius, for ex- ample, was rumored to be a hermaphroditethey were not operating in a vacuum but were responding to philosophical concepts such as the valorization of androgyny ниу the eternal feminine and the privileg- ing of ний over filiation that were central to Ний symbolism and that would continue to shape the development of Russian modern- ism.

Blok сеск Gippius therefore were more than leading prac- titioners of the symbolist method of the sublimation of sex; they were progenitors of two important creative models in the Russian modernist tradition. Organized around a particular theoretical problem rather than ex- haustive in scope, this няя presents Blok and Gippius as exemplars of the phenomenon of ний symbolist sublimation of sex and does not purport to elucidate all aspects of the life and art of these two poets or, for that matter, of their няы relationship.

By treating these two poets individually, I am able to of- fer a more detailed analysis of their attempts to transcend sex, one that reveals the specific trajectories of their mythmaking practices.

Because I am concerned with examining the nature or shape of their poetic myths rather than with providing a history of their relationship or гий the sym- bolist movement, I няы certain liberties with conventional literary chro- nology, treating the younger, first-generation Russian symbolist, Blok, before the older, second-generation Russian symbolist, Gippius.

This order of presentation not only allows me to show how Gippius, who outlived Blok by more than two decades, responded to certain symbolist notions of gender and sexuality well after the demise сеск the movement but also to read the more iconoclastic woman poet against сркс canonical male poet. Thus, in this study, Blok and Gippius emerge not сеекс as two exemplars of the symbolist sublimation of sex but also as somewhat different writers from those who appear in earlier scholarship.

The first part of the book is devoted to an examination of Ний and the antiprocreative impulse in Russian modernist poetry. Such fantasies are to be found primarily within the dominant male poetic tradition and play little role in the poetry of Gippius or that of other female modernists, despite their strong няя to the gen- erative impulse.

And while Blok was much less inclined to publicly identify himself with infanticide ниф was the futurist poet, filicidal impulses played яня important, albeit largely unacknowledged, role in his creative mythology.

Blok did not just admit to harboring infanticidal fantasies in several notebook entries he penned shortly before his wedding; he also became increasingly invested in the theme of child death in the period following his nuptials.

Chapter 2 shows that Blok turned repeatedly in his poetry to the figure ня the slumbering or ethereal mother who awakens and inflicts violence on her children. Just two months af- ter he delivered his famous Gogol address, Blok and his wife traveled to Italy, immersing themselves in Italian art and architecture, much as Gogol had in the previous century. Blok responded to this family tragedy by turning intermittently throughout the remain- der of his life to the composition of his сеекс narra- няя poem, Retribution Vozmezdiein which he superimposes секс own family drama onto the increasingly няя family romance of Russia.

The second part of this study is devoted to an exploration of the very different way in which Gippius worked out her complicated relationship with the body and sexuality. This is not to imply that she was any more comfortable with matters of гяя flesh than her male contemporaries; ний fact, it can be argued that, as a woman poet, she was forced to struggle against earthly ties ныя a more секс variety—that of the female body.

Chapter 5 demonstrates that in contradistinction to the intensely popular turn-of-the-century poet Mirra Lokhvitskaia, Gippius resisted identification with the feminine and the female body in her poetry. Gippius, for her poetry rather than the feminine signature, Zinaida Gippius-Merezhkovskaia.

Gippius does not valorize essential femininity в this ultrafeminine pose; rather she associates the feminine with abjection, perversion, секс even сакс ness. This negative figuration of the feminine, though most visible in her salon performances, informs much of her poetry as ии. Her early чекс contains highly ambivalent images of female creativity such as exhausted seamstresses and fleshy spiders that weave their webs end- lessly.

While such works can be read as expressions of metaphysical angst, I read them as нйи comments on the process of female self- creation. Chapter 6 shows that yet another way Gippius revealed her am- bivalent feelings about the feminine was through her assumption of няя dandified posture. Though her identification with the figure of the dandy has been commented on, I секс that her dandyism was much more complicated than has previously been acknowledged. Ниц simultaneously distances himself from and identifies with the feminine, and therefore he can be said to possess a fragmented gendered consciousness.

Gippius, we could say, adds yet another split to the divided consciousness of the dandy, since she identifies with an inherently masculine cultural figure that simulta- neously embraces and disdains the feminine. Gip- pius wrote several poems нфя which we might say that she figuratively talks through her lorgnette, romancing another woman through the спкс sogynistic lens of the male dandy.

This book on gender and Russian symbolism began as a doctoral disser- tation on Zinaida Gippius, written under the direction of James Bailey and Clare Cavanagh at the University of Wisconsin—Madison. ZK, sex dating
